Bonamici Announces Housing Vouchers for Washington County Homeless Veterans

Beaverton, OR – May 7, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today announced that the Housing Authority of Washington County is now eligible for 35 HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers in addition to the 25 vouchers they have already been awarded. Bonamici requested the additional vouchers in letters to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Affairs. The vouchers will be used to provide housing for homeless veterans in Washington County.

“Homelessness among our veterans is a problem that cannot be tolerated,” said Bonamici. “We have a responsibility to serve those who served us. These housing vouchers will help homeless veterans in Washington County secure safe and affordable housing.”

“The additional 35 vouchers will provide great value to our homeless veterans in Washington County who have honorably served this great country,” said Adolph “Val” Valfre, Jr., Executive Director, Housing Authority of Washington County.

The vouchers will be administered by the Housing Authority of Washington County partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facility, Portland VA Medical Center (VAMC), and Hillsboro Community-Based Outreach Clinic (CBOC).

The HUD Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (VASH) provides rental assistance vouchers specifically targeted to homeless veterans. Public housing authorities work closely with Veteran Affairs Medical Centers to manage the program. In addition to the rental assistance, VA Medical Centers provide supportive services and case management to eligible homeless veterans.
