Wyden, Merkley Announce Nearly $2 Million to Build Addition to Vets Home

Washington, D.C. – October 21, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Continuing efforts to improve the quality of life for Oregon veterans, U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) announced that the State Veterans Home in The Dalles will receive a $1.9 million Federal grant to construct an addition to the facility.  The veterans home currently operates without a common room that can accommodate all of the residents, and the federal grant will be put toward constructing a facility to accommodate large gatherings of residents and their family members.

“In addition to receiving the best quality medical care available, residents at the VA home in The Dalles need a place to meet with family, talk with one another and help each other remain healthy and active,” Wyden said. “This funding will help them do that as well as create jobs planning and constructing the addition.””We owe the veterans who put their lives on the line for our country a comfortable retirement,” said Merkley. “This new expansion will give veterans space where they can catch up with their loved ones and create construction jobs in the process.”

Awarded as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs, this grant provides $1,970,508 to construct a multi-purpose building that will serve as a common area for residents to congregate. Until now, residents had no common areas and were often limited to meeting in smaller rooms. The grant represents 65 percent of the actual cost of constructing the facility and will be disbursed by the State of Oregon.
